Shaker Apple Pie

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place one pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan, gently pressing it into the bottom and sides.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss everything together until the apples are well coated.

  5. Drizzle the lemon juice over the apple mixture and toss again to incorporate.
  6. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust, spreading it evenly. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  7. Cover the pie with the second crust. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal. Cut several small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

  1. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
